Jojoba Oil – The All-Natural, After-Sun Solution
JD Jojoba oil provides skin repair, healing, anti-inflammatory benefits and more in sun care
The minute you get back from the beach, reality hits. Your skin starts to burn, flake, and peel. And all you want is relief. Nourishing after-sun products can immediately soothe the skin from the stinging of sunburn.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Jojoba Oil in Sun Care Products
Jojoba oil aligns with customer demand for clean beauty; it can repair and moisturize irritated and sun-damaged skin. In a study published by R. Habashy in the Pharmacological Research journal, it was found that Jojoba oil applied on irritated skin exerts anti-inflammatory activity similar to an anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and swelling—which can be especially useful in after-sun products.
JD Jojoba oil’s unique structure, which is based on straight chain esters and is all Omega 9 and Vitamin E, mimics 25% of the human sebum and, once applied on irritated skin, has soothing, repairing and moisturizing effects.
After-Sun Healing Effects of Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is safe to use on all skin types, even on sun-injured skin, assisting the skin in its rejuvenating process. In a study published by E. Ranzato in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, it was found that Jojoba oil accelerates wound healing by stimulating collagen synthesis in in vivo tissues. As shown in the image below, the addition of just 1% Jojoba oil accelerated the wound healing in comparison to the control solution.
The skin-repairing properties innately found in Jojoba oil opens up a world of possibilities for its applications, especially in when used to help skin heal more quickly from severe sunburns.
Boosting Stability in Sun Care
Stability is a huge benefit for sun care products, as consumers in many parts of the world utilize sun care products on an irregular or seasonal basis, and need the product to maintain efficacy longer in the bottle. A recent study showed just how beneficial adding Jojoba oil to a formulation was for a product’s stability. The oxidative stability of different vegetable oils was tested by the commonly used Rancimat method, and in this experiment, Jojoba oil showed the highest oxidation stability among tested oils. Its exceptional stability is attributed to the unique chemical structure – straight chain esters, compared to other vegetable oils with a branched triglyceride structure that tends to oxidative degradation. Not only was Jojoba oil shown to have outstanding stability, but adding Jojoba oil to other carrier oils commonly found in sun care, including Hemp oil, improved their stability to much higher levels (see chart below). In the case of avocado oil, it was improved by 400%.
“The skin-repairing, anti-inflammatory and stability-boosting properties found in Jojoba oil opens up a world of possibilities,” says Anna Aharoni, R&D Manager at Jojoba Desert (A.C.S.) Ltd. “Not only is Jojoba oil beneficial in traditional cosmetic formulations—it can simply revolutionize sun care application.”
